Investing in Bytebeam: Cloud Infrastructure for Smart Devices

We’re pleased to announce our investment in Bytebeam, a company improving cloud infrastructure for smart devices with a comprehensive end-to-end platform.

A 10x IoT decade

The global IoT landscape is on the cusp of a massive transformation, with devices projected to grow 10x this decade.

10x
Growth in IoT devices this decade
$14.5B
OEM spend on IoT cloud infrastructure in 2023
48%
Year-on-year growth in that spend

The infrastructure gap

Despite the growth, no established cloud offering provides a complete solution for IoT workloads. OEMs end up combining multiple services in-house or buying professional services that cost $1–1.5 million and take 6–12 months to implement. That is especially painful for hardware companies, whose expertise is industrial design, manufacturing and supply chain — not backend infrastructure.

What Bytebeam covers

Data
Setting up device gateways, collecting time-series data and visualizing it.
Mobile
Device-to-mobile backend sync so users can control devices from an app.
Logs and alerts
Collecting logs and managing alerts to catch device failures.
Debug and update
Remote login and over-the-air firmware updates.

Bytebeam is backend-as-a-service for IoT — what Firebase did for mobile applications, and a natural progression for the ecosystem.

The team

The team has experience across the whole IoT stack: hardware, firmware and software. Ravi (CTO) was data platform lead at Ather and before that at Intel, and is active in the open-source Rust ecosystem. Bharadwaj (Embedded Systems) was embedded systems VP at Grinntech and led the embedded team at Ather. Achal Kothari (Head of Business), IIT Madras ’11, was head of customer success at Haptik and a business advisor to Ather.
